Could this be the win that catapults the Jets to the top of the AFC East for good? While that is still T.B.D., New York overcame a huge mental hurdle by defeating New England for just the 2nd time since 2002. And it couldn’t have come in a more dramatic or entertaining fashion.

This contest was a duel between the two QBs, where Brett Favre and Matt Cassel combined for 658 yards, 5 TDs and 0 INTs. And while this could be the game to earn him a very hefty contract offer at season’s end, Matt Cassel and the Pats still came out on the short end of the stick despite mounting a dazzling drive to send this one to OT.

After winning the coin toss in the extra period, the Jets faced a key 3rd and 15 at their own 15 yard line. Punting and giving New England the ball with great field position looked like a distinct possibility, but Favre added to his legend by completing a 16 yard pass to his new favorite target, rookie TE Dustin Keller. He then led his team into scoring position to finally get the monkey known as the Patriots off their back.

Not to be forgotten in this affair is RB Thomas Jones, who has had a resurgent season after posting just 1 TD in 2007. With an improved offensive line and hall of fame QB, Jones has posted 9 TDs this season, tying a career high, while averaging almost 1 yard per carry more than last season.

Only time will tell if this Jets team is poised to make a run in the playoffs, but they are surely one of the hottest teams in the league, winning 6 out of their last 7 games. While I’m not a Jets fan, it’s tough to not root for Brett Favre – I think after all he has given to this league, it would be fitting to see him go out on top.
